From 2018 to 2023, the number of small businesses that had their own websites increased from 50% to 73%, and that includes coaches and online service providers. It’s evident that there’s a demand for online information, which is why so many have adopted digital marketing strategies.
If you’re in the minority and don’t have a small business website, then this should be a wake-up call to follow suit. Otherwise, you’ll be left in the dust, and it’ll be a struggle to find potential customers.
So how do you create a website for your business? We’ll break it down into seven easy steps you can follow.
The domain name is your website’s main page name or URL. When choosing one (I like to recommend GoDaddy), it’s essential that you pick something easy to remember. Naturally, you’ll want it to reflect your business name as well.
For the best results, don’t use numbers, hyphens, or any other symbols. Not only are those difficult to recall, but they also make your domain name look less professional. If you need to get creative, then add the name of your city or neighborhood.
Also, double-check that you aren’t spelling out anything unfortunate when words are joined together in the domain. This can ruin your brand reputation.
After you’ve picked a domain name and checked that it’s available, you have to register it. There are several choices for registrars, and they usually cost below $30 per year. You’ll have to do your due diligence to figure out which ones have the right features for your needs.
That’s not all though. After registering your domain, you’ll have to pay a hosting provider to make your website live. Many people opt to go for an all-in-one solution for convenience’s sake, and it’s often cheaper too.
If you haven’t chosen an all-in-one solution, then the next step is finding the perfect website-building platform.
Many of these platforms cater to people who have zero web design experience. However, it still may take quite a bit of effort to learn the interfaces, so expect to devote a good chunk of time to web design, even if you pick a platform that’s more intuitive.
Take advantage of any free trials if you can, as it’ll allow you to get a firsthand feel for things. This can inspire more confidence in your final choice.
I personally recommend Showit because it’s an amazing website builder. Basically, all you have to do is drag and drop to come up with a refined and gorgeous website. Not only is it intuitive, but it also gives you lots of creative freedom so you don’t end up with cookie-cutter pages.
Now is the time to bring your website to life. Website-building platforms will have preset templates and themes, meaning you won’t have to create a site from scratch. So if you were worried about website layout ideas, you can take it easy here.
Feel free to experiment with the different elements to see what speaks to you. Make sure that the colors, fonts, and images reflect your personal branding, as this will make a stronger and longer-lasting impression. Branding and website design go hand-in-hand; if you haven’t given thought to branding yet, then do that first before setting up your site.
The main goal is to create a clean and user-friendly design that makes it easy for users to navigate your site. They should be able to find the information they need quickly.
Your website now has a home page and a contact page; it may even have some service pages to show what you offer. But overall, it’s still very barebones, and it’s probably not enough to keep users on your site.
This is where content shines, especially if you provide relevant and useful information. You’ll want to write engaging copy for your website that clearly communicates your brand message, products/services, and value proposition.
Writing is vital for communicating with your potential clients, but don’t make it text only, as it’ll be boring. Don’t forget to sprinkle in high-quality images, videos, and other multimedia elements to enhance the user experience. This will entice users to stay on your pages longer.
Having a clean and user-friendly site that contains highly relevant content is only one part of creating something effective. You’ll also want to practice search engine optimization (SEO), which is a key item on the website design checklist.
When you pay attention to SEO, this improves your site’s visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs). You can do this by researching relevant keywords for your industry and incorporating them into your content, as well as headings and meta tags.
Making your website mobile-friendly is a plus too. You’ll also rank higher if it loads fast.
You can always DIY a business website. However, as you can see from the above steps, it can be a time-consuming process. And ultimately, your results won’t be very refined, especially if you have zero experience.
A much better route is to hire a professional. With expert website design services, you’ll get amazing web pages that reflect what your brand stands for.
More importantly, you won’t have to deal with generic templates. While those are great for hobby sites, they simply don’t cut it for small businesses. A pro web designer will customize all elements of your site, guaranteeing that users will see something that’s one-of-a-kind.
How do you create a website for your business? Well, you can always go the DIY route. However, you’ll have to either sink countless hours into learning coding or use lackluster templates to build your site.
The better option is to hire a professional. My team and I will listen to your needs and come up with a design that’s fresh and attractive to consumers. And as a result, you’ll see your sales profits soar.
